Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This "jubilee celebration" Special Issue of Pharmaceutics is in Honor of Prof. DDr. Gerhard Litscher‘s 65th birthday for his outstanding scientific contributions in laser medicine and related fields, from photomedicine to nanomedicine in photodynamic, photothermal and photoimmune therapy.Professor DDr. Gerhard Litscher is the President of the International Society for Medical Laser Applications (ISLA transcontinental, since 2012), the German Vice President of the German-Chinese Research Foundation (DCFG, since 2014), and the Chairman of Consensus Guidelines for Laser Acupuncture of the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (WALT). He is the Honorary Chairman of the European Federation of Acupuncture–Moxibustion Societies (since 2022). He is a member of the expert panels of the World Health Organization (WHO) for acupuncture and related fields, and is an Honorary or Guest Professor at 12 top universities and institutions in China. Gerhard Litscher was the Head of the Research Unit for Complementary and Integrative Laser Medicine (2012–2023), the Research Unit of Biomedical Engineering in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (2005–2023), and the Founding Director as well as Chairman of the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Research Center (2007–2023) at the Medical University of Graz. He is a Doctor of Technical Sciences and Doctor of Medical Sciences, and has published approximately 700 scientific contributions (~300 SCI/PubMed-listed). He is an author and/or editor of more than 20 books and an editor and/or Editorial Board Member of more than 30 international journals. In honor and recognition of Prof. DDr. Gerhard Litscher’s dedicated and successful medical endeavor, this Special Issue welcomes the submission of original research manuscripts or reviews in the area of pharmaceutical sciences and the latest combined integrative therapies such as photothermal, photodynamic and photo-immunotherapy (PTT, PDT, PIT), together with light-triggered multifunctional nanoplatforms loaded with novel nanodrugs as smart solutions in synergistic nanomedicine of the future. We invite all of you to contribute interesting papers and cutting-edge results in this exciting research and medical field, and open up additional avenues to accelerate the advancement of innovative approaches for multi-target tumor management, so as to meet the critical needs of patients and redefine cancer therapy. We aim to collect and introspect high-tech medical applications in molecular and cellular research of photosensitizers, new light and laser energy delivery systems, nanorobots and nanomedicines, as well as the features of photomedicine integration of PTT, PDT and PIT as molecular-targeted therapies in immuno-oncology, from bench to bedside. These amazing nanomedical breakthroughs to be revealed in this anniversary Special Issue are expected to bring cancer patients new hope for a longer life expectancy or even a cure. It is the perfect time for formidable innovations and major challenges in cancer therapy.

Keywords: cancer therapy; tumor recurrence and metastasis; photomedicine; photobiomodulation; new photosensitizers; nanotechnology; nanomedicine; photothermal therapy; photodynamic therapy; photo-immunotherapy; clinical applications of PTT; PDT and PIT; immunogenic cell death; drug design; drug delivery systems; light-triggered multifunctional nanoplatforms; controlled release; unmet clinical needs; nanotherapies targeting mitochondria; nanoparticles; nanosystems; nanorobots; nanocarriers; radiation therapy.

We plan to receive submissions until December 31, 2023. Manuscripts will be published online on an ongoing basis after being processed.
